Born in Connecticut, came west as an itinerant evangelist and strong abolitionist, settled in St. Clair County, Illinois. In 1827 he opened his Rock Spring Theological Seminary and High School which moved to Alton, Illinois in 1832 and was renamed Shurtleff College. From the description of Papers, 1819-1856.
